Wayne Farms in Poultry Magazine

Before I continue with this post, I will inform everyone that I used to work for Wayne Farms in Douglas, GA. It is the only job I have ever had where I was sad that I had to leave. It was for family reasons, so it worked out fine but if anyone has a chance to work for this company, they really do treat you well and make you enjoy your work. I was a QA/Lab Supervisor for about 3 years and hated to leave. Anyway, more to the point (and yes, I know this is a fragment, but I don't really care).

I truly believe that Wayne Farms goes above and beyond in its call for food safety and quality. We (QA) could have any product that we considered unsafe for any reason rejected and disposed of in a proper manner. It is necessary in any business to make hard choices about quality and production, but there was never any problem if the product posed even a negligible risk for safety.

In the June/July issue of Poultry magazine, there is an article concerning the opening of the newest Wayne Farms plant in Decatur, AL. It discusses the many steps that are taken to prevent problems with the product including separate entrances for the raw and cooked sides of the plant, and the airflow system along with other steps to prevent allergen contamination.

Kudos to Myke Gregg. I see that she is the QA Manager for the facility. She previously was in the R&D department. I always enjoyed her visits to our plant. She is without a doubt, one of the most qualified people the company could have put in that position. I know some of the other people at that plant and I wish them well in their careers.

If I had been able to make a transfer from Douglas to Decatur, it would have been a lifesaver and I would still be working for Wayne Farms. The only thing my wife wanted was to be closer to her family in North Mississippi but I was never allowed to transfer so I had to quit and move. One of the saddest days of my career.
